Frequently asked questions

Do Savannah cats make good pets?

Savannah kittens form a very special, strong, and unique bond with their human family that is unlike any other bond you have experienced. Not only are they beautiful and exotic in appearance, but also they are large and playful, and enjoy interacting with kids, other family members, and pets. Many of my F1 Savannah kittens become best friends with clients’ small children and even seem to bond more closely with them.

In my experience, there is no better family pet than a Savannah cat. Your new fur baby will have the energy and loyalty of a new puppy but exhibit the independence and awareness of the best domestic house cat.

What is it like to have a Savannah cat as a pet?

F1, F2, and F3 Savannah kittens tend to behave a lot more like their serval ancestors. They may naturally establish social structures or a hierarchy within your family, are cautious around new acquaintances, and benefit from purposeful socialization to develop meaningful relationships with both humans and other animals. Other behaviors you can expect to see include:

  • Jumping, leaping, and “play” ambushing you.
  • Savannahs may see other animals as prey and may bring you “gifts” in the form of their kill. If you allow your Savannah outdoors, provide proper supervision in a fully enclosed yard.
  • Set consistent rules and Sanannahs will thrive. Without those rules, Savannahs can become anxious. If your kitten isn’t allowed to open a kitchen cabinet door today, don’t permit that behavior tomorrow. (Yes! They can easily open a kitchen cabinet door.)

F4, F5, and F6 Savannah cats will behave more like domestic cats but are considered much more intelligent and have higher energy. Be prepared to spend plenty of time playing with and providing mental stimulation for your new fur baby – and keep an eye out for the behaviors mentioned above.

How should you care for your Savannah cat?

Taking home your very own Savannah kitten is exciting. But there are some things you should know before you can welcome one of my Savannah kittens into your home.

While the basics of caring for your Savannah kitten are like that of any other cat, these unique animals require a lot from their owners. I spend a lot of time working with potential owners to determine whether their family and home are a good fit.
